Bighorn Lake is a long, narrow reservoir formed by Yellowtail Dam on the Bighorn River along the Montana–Wyoming border. Steep canyon walls, deep water, and cold releases from the dam shape conditions throughout the year. Because of its canyon setting, wind and weather can change quickly and vary by section.
Fishing Bighorn Lake often centers on depth changes, steep banks, and transition areas where the reservoir narrows or bends. Fish commonly relate to drop-offs, ledges, and canyon structure rather than broad flats. Cold water and dam influence make seasonal timing important, with early and late windows often more productive.
Access is available through designated recreation areas near the dam and along the lake, with parking, shoreline access, and seasonal boating facilities. Access points are limited, and travel distances can be significant. Wind exposure increases in narrow canyon sections.
Fees: Day-use or parking fees may apply at some federally managed access areas.
Fishing regulations are managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, with additional considerations related to dam operations and the nearby Wyoming border. Water levels and conditions can change with management needs. Always confirm current regulations and local notices before fishing.
