Hungry Horse Reservoir is a massive mountain reservoir in northwestern Montana, stretching along the South Fork of the Flathead River just outside Glacier National Park. Known for its cold, clear water and dramatic scenery, it’s a destination that feels remote and wild, even though it’s easily accessible from nearby towns.
Fishing at Hungry Horse Reservoir is best known for kokanee salmon, lake trout, bull trout, and westslope cutthroat trout. Kokanee provide the most consistent action, especially during the summer months, while deep-water trolling is popular for lake trout. Spring and fall tend to offer the best conditions, with cooler water temperatures and increased fish activity.
Public access is available near Hungry Horse Dam and along the South Fork corridor, with basic boat ramps and limited services. Campgrounds and forest service roads provide additional shoreline access.
Regulations are closely managed due to native trout species, including bull trout. Special rules and seasonal restrictions may apply.
