Grindstone Lake is a popular mountain lake in Ruidoso, surrounded by forest and close to town amenities. It’s one of the better “vacation lakes” in the state: you can fish, paddle, hike, and still be back in town for dinner.
Grindstone Lake is commonly fished for trout during cooler months and can also provide warmwater opportunities depending on the season. Because it’s popular and close to town, timing matters: early morning and evening typically produce the best fishing during busy periods. Shoreline access is good, and anglers do well with small spinners, spoons, and bait for trout, while warmwater anglers often focus on edges and structure. It’s not a “secret lake,” but it’s reliable when you fish it smart.
Grindstone Lake offers strong day-use style access, including good shoreline reach and nearby amenities because of its location in Ruidoso. It’s one of the more comfortable lakes to fish as part of a broader trip, with plenty of options for food, lodging, and other recreation nearby. Expect crowds during peak travel times and plan your fishing windows around that.
Fees: Day-use or parking fees may apply at some federally managed access areas.
Grindstone Lake regulations generally follow New Mexico rules, but seasonal stocking and heavy use can bring additional guidance. Check current limits and any lake-specific notices before fishing, especially regarding bait use, boating, and seasonal restrictions.
